De som slogs, de som bad - En jämförande analys av fysisk aktivitet och social status i dominikanerkonventet S:t Nicolai, Helsingborg

- Abstract
- The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to examine whether, to what degree and in what pattern physical activity differed between medieval men of differing social status. An overall purpose of this was to test whether, and to what degree the purported warrior culture of the medieval nobility had on its manual physical activity. This was tested by examining the patterns of humeral midshaft bone geometrical robusticity, form and bilateral asymmetry of two areas related to social status, within the high and late medieval St Nicolai convent, Helsingborg. The results were mainly achieved by Mann-Whitney U-tests, and showed non-statistically significant trends that hinted towards that men associated with higher social status had a higher degree of... The results were mainly achieved by Mann-Whitney U-tests, and showed non-statistically significant trends that hinted towards that men associated with higher social status had a higher degree of robusticity and a more distinct differential loading pattern. However, these men simultaneously displayed a much higher degree of variance in robusticity, which included more exceptionally gracile individuals. Albeit limited in several ways, the results are interpreted as potentially indicating that a large portion of high social status men had substantially elevated levels of physical activity, but calls for these indications to be either confirmed or rejected by future studies.
