Abstract
This thesis examines how the Italian party Fratelli d’Italia (FDI), generally regarded as a radical right-wing populist party, carries out its foreign policy while in government. The aim is to assess whether FDI´s foreign policy aligns the typical features of radical right populism or whether it instead shows signs of other types of populism, such as regionalist, market liberal or left-wing populism. Using a descriptive case study design, the analysis is based on the Populist Foreign Policy (PFP) framework and a classification model to identify what kind of populism each action can be classified under. The findings show that while FDI does act in accordance with radical right populism in some cases, it also follows patterns that align more closely with other populist types. This thesis contributes to a better understanding of how populist ideology shapes foreign policy when such parties are in power. (Less)
