Abstract
Changes to the Education Act in 2025 will mean that school libraries will have a specific objective of promoting students' reading and media and information literacy. Meanwhile, school library spaces can vary greatly in terms of accessibility and size. The aim of this thesis is therefore to provide knowledge about how the work of school librarians is affected by the possibilities and limitations of the library space. The thesis also aims to provide knowledge about how school librarians view the library space. Through this, the thesis intends to illustrate how the composition of the space can affect the librarian's ability to promote students' reading and media and information literacy. The theoretical framework combines Lefebvre's theory on the production of social space with the Four Space Model, developed by Jochumsen, Hvenegaard Rasmussen and Skot-Hansen. Four upper secondary school librarians were interviewed and four two-hour-long observations were made in each of the interviewed librarians' school library spaces. The findings indicate that school librarians perceive the library spaces in various ways and consider them to serve multiple functions. The space functions as a learning space as well as a meeting space, making flexible layouts important. The library is also viewed and utilised as a safe space for recreation, free of demands. In promoting reading and media and information literacy, the space is necessary as it provides a meeting space where individual guidance and help can be offered. Lastly, the library space is seen as very important by the interviewed librarians. It is not only a safe space for their students, but also a space where the librarian can be visible and offer help to students and staff. Based on this, the thesis argues that the library space should not be neglected in future research and debate concerning school libraries. (Less)
