Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
In relation with education regarding digital tools as well as internships related to EDI an interest was developed in researching what subject knowledge is needed in teaching this instrument, as well as what teachers incorporate in their instrument lessons on a high school level. Three research questions emerged from this in relation to primary instrument teachings on a high school level: (i) What subject knowledge regarding EDI do EDI-teachers deem necessary for their teaching? (ii) What content EDI-teachers choose to include in their teaching? What possibilities and challenges do EDI-teachers experience in their teaching? (iii) The literature review examines descriptions of EDI, EDI:s development in high schools, teachers subject... (More)

(ii) What content EDI-teachers choose to include in their teaching? What possibilities and challenges do EDI-teachers experience in their teaching? (iii) The literature review examines descriptions of EDI, EDI:s development in high schools, teachers subject knowledge, primary instrument teaching in high school, possibilities and challenges related to EDI as well as proficiency in digital music making.
The data has mainly been collected through semi-structured qualitative interviews with teachers from different high schools and colleges in Sweden that are currently or have been formerly active in teaching EDI. Beside the interviews, the data has been supplemented with observations.
Based on the results a collective consensus emerges of what teachers deem relevant regarding EDI, this includes a shared understanding of what EDI is (computer, software and control surfaces), good computer knowledge and understanding of software, instrumental technique on different control surfaces as well as knowledge regarding sound design. The study also shows what content EDI-teachers choose to include in their teaching. Instrumental technique, sound design and control over the software is deemed as important aspects to include, as well as making students self-sufficient in the design of their instrument. Challenges the teachers point out include the instrument's evolving nature in regard to software updates, technical difficulties and the big scope of EDI as an instrument that can disguise its possibilities for students. At the same time the instrument's range of possibilities is pointed out as a defining factor. (Less)
