- Citizen participation has emerged as a key approach in developing cities in a sustainable manner. Particular attention must be given to social sustainability, especially in response to changes in urban societies that are increasing the disparities in access to adequate living conditions and vital resources. - Citizen participation has emerged as a key approach in developing cities in a sustainable manner. These disparities contribute to spatial segregation of individuals based on socioeconomic differences, turning it into an structural issue. This study aims to explore the influence of citizen participation, as well as the limitations and opportunities of the approach for strengthening social sustainability. The study focuses on the socioeconomically disadvantaged area Hammarkullen in Gothenburg, examining how participation can be interrelated to the concept of the right to the city. By analysing previous citizen participation processes, the research seeks to expand the understanding of how participation can be implemented in shaping urban areas and elevate social sustainability. This study provides insight of the relationship between citizen participation and social sustainability that can be applied to the development of more inclusive urban planning. (Less)
