Abstract
During the last ten years, many reports have highlighted the increasingly stressed working environment in Swedish public libraries. Librarians are experiencing elevated stress levels and encountering various forms of disorder in their daily work.

To investigate this, qualitive interviews were conducted were conducted with seven librarians working at public libraries in the region of Scania. During the last ten years, many reports have highlighted the increasingly stressed working environment in Swedish public libraries. Librarians are experiencing elevated stress levels and encountering various forms of disorder in their daily work.

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate and contribute with insights of how librarians perceive and manage different forms of disorder in public libraries. To investigate this, qualitive interviews were conducted were conducted with seven librarians working at public libraries in the region of Scania. The data was thematically analysed using a theoretical framework consisting of Schatzkis understanding of practice theory and new institutional theory. By applying practice theory, the study shows how librarians shape the social environment of the library. The usage of new institutional theory helps illuminate how institutional norms and rules govern and legitimise librarians’ responses to disruptive individuals and groups.

The findings showed that the librarians perceived disorder as a behaviour that violates formal or informal rules of the library. To combat disorder, the librarians worked with preventative and interventional measures The librarians' perception of their professional roles and scope for action in relation to disorder varied, depending on the librarians’ individual initiatives and the resources available to them.
