Urban Circularity in Practice: Connecting Circular Economy and Urban Resilience - A Case Study of Uppsala Municipality
(2025) SGEM07 20251Department of Human Geography
- Abstract
- The overall theme for this thesis is circular economy and how it relates to resilience, specifically urban and economic resilience, by using Uppsala municipality as a case study. By conducting semi-structured interviews with municipal connected employees, along with analysing relevant municipal documents and statements, this paper examines how these two concepts relate to one another in a practical urban setting. Three research questions are formulated, focusing on circular economy in urban development, the relation between the concepts, and what barriers currently exist that influence implementation. The methodological approach is retroductive; thus some conditions are determined beforehand, but it also allows for new data to arise as a... (More)
- The overall theme for this thesis is circular economy and how it relates to resilience, specifically urban and economic resilience, by using Uppsala municipality as a case study. The methodological approach is retroductive; thus some conditions are determined beforehand, but it also allows for new data to arise as a result of coding the chosen and produced material. The study reveals that some connection can be made between the concepts, mainly in regards to fundamental environmental benefits but also strengthening a city’s independence and long-lasting sustainability. Furthermore, similarities are drawn to the two concepts' emphasis on locality and resource efficiency as well as requiring a systematic perspective. It is also highlighted that the circular economy is a more explicitly defined concept with clear strategies and objectives, while resilience becomes a beneficial aspect as a result of implementing circular ideals.
