From pages to places: portrayals of environmental challenges in Vietnamese children’s picture storybooks

Abstract
The use of picture storybooks has the potential to foster children’s environmental awareness and promote behavioural change, but little is known about their connection to the local context, particularly in Vietnam. This thesis presents a qualitative content analysis of sixteen children’s picture storybooks with environmental themes written by Vietnamese authors and illustrators, examining how they portray environmental challenges and their solutions. The analysis is based on the biophysical, psychological, sociocultural and political economic dimensions of the place-based education framework. Given the importance of place in strengthening children’s emotional connection and responsibility toward their communities, these insights highlight future opportunities for authors, illustrators, and publishers to produce more locally grounded environmental picture storybooks in Vietnam. Việc sử dụng sách tranh có nhiều tiềm năng trong việc thúc đẩy nhận thức về môi trường ở trẻ em và khuyến khích thay đổi hành vi. Tuy nhiên, mối liên hệ giữa sách tranh với bối cảnh địa phương, đặc biệt là ở Việt Nam, vẫn còn ít được nghiên cứu. Luận văn này trình bày phân tích nội dung định tính (qualitative content analysis) đối với 16 cuốn sách tranh thiếu nhi về chủ đề môi trường của các tác giả và họa sĩ minh họa Việt Nam, nhằm tìm hiểu cách các tác phẩm này miêu tả vấn đề môi trường và các giải pháp liên quan.
