Abstract
This thesis explores the interpretations of Matthew 16:18 across various ecclesiastical traditions (such as Equmeniakyrkan, Svenska Kyrkan, and Romersk-katolska kyrkan) and their theological and ecclesiological implications. Through a critical analysis of these interpretations in the context... (More)
This thesis explores the interpretations of Matthew 16:18 across various ecclesiastical traditions (such as Equmeniakyrkan, Svenska Kyrkan, and Romersk-katolska kyrkan) and their theological and ecclesiological implications. Employing a qualitative, abductive approach through in-depth interviews and thematic analysis, the study delves into how the “rock” in Matthew 16:18 is perceived and its significance for the church. The findings indicate a spectrum of interpretations contingent upon ecclesiastical tradition: Catholic traditions emphasize the person of Peter and his apostolic authority, while Protestant traditions highlight Peter's confession as the foundation of faith. Through a critical analysis of these interpretations in the context of historical and theological perspectives, this research provides a nuanced understanding of Matthew 16:18 and its symbolic significance. The study concludes with methodological reflections and proposes avenues for further research to enhance the comprehension of this pivotal biblical text and its impact on the foundation of the church.
