Abstract
This thesis investigates the open stormwater system in Augustenborg, Malmö, and aims to understand the past political goals and compare them with the present day structures, their current condition and how people interact with them. Drawing on planning documents and related sources from the time of the system’s development, the study explores the political and ecological goals that underpinned its implementation. By using documents from when the system was created it examines the political- and sustainability goals of the project in search for signs of erosion. Methods used are document analysis, onsite qualitative observations and photo documentation. The analysis is framed by using political ecology as a lens, which enables a critical... (More)
This thesis investigates the open stormwater system in Augustenborg, Malmö, and aims to understand the past political goals and compare them with the present day structures, their current condition and how people interact with them. The analysis is framed by using political ecology as a lens, which enables a critical investigation of power relations between institutional actors and local communities, during the planning and the present-day experience of the system. Additional concepts like resilient thinking and ecosystem services are also employed to get a broader and deeper understanding of the project, its benefits and goals. It concludes that some shifts in the project’s sustainability ambitions mainly regard the inclusion of the community during the development, but some shifts can be seen in the built environment as well.
