As modern vehicles become increasingly connected and software-dependent, the automotive industry requires cybersecurity training that is both effective and aligned with evolving and emerging roles. As modern vehicles become increasingly connected and software-dependent, the automotive industry requires cybersecurity training that is both effective and aligned with evolving and emerging roles. This study explores factors that influence employees’ perceptions of the rele-vance of role-based cybersecurity training within this context. While role-based training (RBT) is designed to align content with specific job responsibilities, real-world complexity may challenge this alignment. Through thematic analysis, three overarching categories of influence emerged: (1) role structure and responsibility-related factors, (2) context-dependent factors and (3) organizational and awareness-related factors. The findings suggest that perceptions of training relevance are shaped by a nuanced interplay of formal roles, situational dynamics, and broader organizational context. These insights contribute to the literature on cybersecurity training by highlighting the importance of context-aware, flexible training strategies that go beyond static role definitions, and with practical implications for training designers and industry leaders.
