- Abstract
- Today, in our ever-changing world, the concept of open-air museums, whose main purpose is heritage preservation, must meet the challenges of the times. These include finding a new role in the modern world, necessity to remain relevant, and addressing the challenges of funding for long-term sustainable development. Our master's thesis examines the case of Fredriksdal Open-Air Museum. We focus on the experiencescape in action and view it as an active agent in the curation of a visitors' experience. More specifically, the experiencescapes role in how visitors perceive and create value. The main aim of our study is to understand in what ways do visitors connect with an open-air museum in the off-season? In our study we use a qualitative... (More)

In our study we use a qualitative approach and combine participant observation and semi-structured interviews to gather empirical data. Our main findings include the ambiguous nature of Fredriksdal Open-Air Museum, particularly in the off-season time, and ways in which that allows visitors to participate in the process of value co-creation. Through the experiencescape of the museum, visitors have the opportunity to autonomously interact with the landscape, actively interpreting it and bringing their own emotions and background into the interactions. We uncover alternative purposes of the setting in the off-season, when the museum's offerings and programmes are limited. These findings not only contribute to the niche of open-air museums in the field of service management studies, but also offer practical implications for museum professionals on how to possibly improve engagement with experiencescape during long periods off-season.
