Abstract
This thesis investigates how women's suit trousers from different price ranges differ in terms of durability, construction, and materials and discusses which pair of trousers has the longest lifespan. The study is grounded in theories of class, consumption, and luxury, and explores the concept of quality and longevity. By combining theoretical perspectives with a six-step object analysis, three pairs of suit trousers from H&M, ARKET, and DAGMAR are examined and compared. The analysis reveals distinct differences in material composition and construction quality between the garments, though these are not always visible at first glance. By investigating three questions: How do three women's suit trousers in different price ranges differ in... (More)
This thesis investigates how women's suit trousers from different price ranges differ in terms of durability, construction, and materials and discusses which pair of trousers has the longest lifespan. By investigating three questions: How do three women's suit trousers in different price ranges differ in terms of durability, construction, and materials? How does the brand's symbolic value influence the consumer's purchasing decision? Which pair of suit trousers has the longest lifespan?
Moreover, the study shows how fashion extends beyond materiality. Brand presentation, product descriptions, and symbolic associations significantly affect consumer behavior. H&M mimics premium design while ARKET and DAGMAR emphasize durability and craftsmanship, which is appealing to environmentally conscious consumers with a future-oriented mindset. Ultimately, DAGMAR’s trousers were assessed to have the longest expected lifespan due to thoughtful material choices and durable construction. The thesis concludes with a call for systemic change in the fashion industry, highlighting the need for sustainable materials, circular business models to more responsible and long-lasting approach to fashion.
