Abstract (Swedish)
This thesis investigates the trends of subnational economic development in Vietnam
from 2018 to 2023 to test for economic convergence on a regional scale in addition to analysing the extent to which local institutions lead to differing economic outcomes. The findings of this paper suggests that there existed a wide gap in the economic performance of Vietnamese provinces at the start of the period. While there has been evidence of income converging over time, the gap remains large and the covid recession has exacerbated this gap. Overall, the study finds that provinces which possess more transparent and market friendly institutions have generally grown faster than their peers.
