Abstract
This study investigates lexical transfer in the acquisition of Swedish as a third language (L3) among L1 Ukrainian speakers with English as their second language (L2). Employing theoretical frameworks from crosslinguistic influence (CLI) and psychotypology, the research examines how perceived linguistic proximity and proficiency levels can mediate the influence of L1 and L2 on L3 vocabulary acquisition. This study investigates lexical transfer in the acquisition of Swedish as a third language (L3) among L1 Ukrainian speakers with English as their second language (L2). Employing theoretical frameworks from crosslinguistic influence (CLI) and psychotypology, the research examines how perceived linguistic proximity and proficiency levels can mediate the influence of L1 and L2 on L3 vocabulary acquisition. The study addresses three key questions. First, it investigates how the native language, Ukrainian (L1), and the second language, English (L2), influence the choice of lexical units, both in terms of form and meaning, when learners translate into Swedish as their third language (L3). Second, it examines whether the influence of the native language, Ukrainian (L1), or the second language, English (L2), is stronger when producing lexical items in Swedish (L3). Lastly, the study explores how perceived linguistic similarity and language proficiency relate to transfer patterns from both L1 and L2 to L3. A mixed methods design includes questionnaires, translation tasks, and interviews administered to 16 participants, native Ukrainian speakers currently acquiring Swedish. Lexical transfer errors in translation tasks are categorized as formbased or meaning-based, following Ringbom’s (2001) taxonomy. The results from the questionnaire indicate that Swedish is perceived as more closely related to English than to Ukrainian. Data from the experimental and interview sections show that participants draw more extensively on lexical resources from English than from their native language when translating into Swedish. The findings also suggest that both L1 and L2 influence L3 lexical production, but L2 English often dominates in the transfer and could contribute to the theoretical understanding of multilingual lexical transfer and inform pedagogical strategies for facilitating L3 acquisition.
