- Abstract
- This thesis examines Swedish bilateral imports between 1860 to 1913 to assess Sweden’s
1888 shift from free trade to protectionism on Swedish bilateral imports while also exploring
the Swedish Norwegian free trade agreement known as Mellanrikslagen during this period.
This is approached using Difference in Differences and an event study within a gravity
framework. The gravity methodology is complemented with the Synthetic Control Method.
The results regarding the 1888 shift to protectionism are unclear, as the main model fails to
find any significant impact on Swedish bilateral imports. In contrast, the findings for
Mellanrikslagen suggest that it had a significant large positive effect on Swedish imports from
