Abstract (Swedish)
“Netflix and chill?” It has been 10 years since this phrase has become an innuendo for casual sex. Netflix has become a streaming titan with over 300 million subscribers. Those baits not only serve your sensual or pleasurable experiences but also gendered power dynamics in heterosexual representation. Netflix sells a lifestyle. The purpose of this case study is to illuminate the underlying discourse in heterosexual sex in Netflix Original Steamy Movies. I examine the representations of heterosexual sex in the chosen titles in regards to issues of gender and power dynamics in heterosexuals. Netflix’s platform affordances, astute economic interest and marketing tactics are also discussed as all of which are what make Netflix unique. The research approach applied in this study is case study. By performing qualitative thematic content analysis to gain an all-round picture of heterosexual sex in Netflix Original Steamy Movies and delve into power dynamics embedded in the gendered representation. The researcher followed Flick’s (2014) idea involving frequency counts with the findings. The outcome of the research is that the overwhelming penetration-centric sexuality represented across the collection. The solid dominant male/submissive female roles and the penetration-centric format/sequence (kissing, foreplay and PVI without external clitoral stimulation resulted in male orgasm) was persistently held. Female sexual pleasure or orgasm experience were represented as something to be achieved by the phallus and highlights the absence of sexual communication and female sexual agency. Non-penetrative intimacy or clitoral stimulation such as cunnilingus or manual stimulation of female genitalia tended to be neglected and sorted as ‘foreplay’ to perform PVI. Steamy Movies as a heterosexual fantasy ensure its audiences heteronormative romance, phallic heterosexual masculinity and female submission, and stylised male gaze. (Less)
