- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to explore and visualize individuals’ personal experiences of the social work carried out by the social services. We have examined individuals’ opinions and feelings based on their experiences and contact with the social services. Through six qualitative interviews based on the Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, we have analyzed the empirical data by applying Charles Horton Cooley's (2019/1902) theory about “the looking-glass self” and Silvan Tomkins' (1963 & 1991) theory concerning the psychology of affects. The findings from our study revealed that the interviewees’ attitudes towards the social services among our interviewees in most cases changed after the first meeting. The findings from our study revealed that the interviewees’ attitudes towards the social services among our interviewees in most cases changed after the first meeting. Fear and worries were described by the clients before contact with social services had begun. The majority of the individuals we interviewed had positive experiences of their contact with social services, even though we detected several opportunities for improvement within the social work profession. We were also able to discern that the treatment provided by social services played a major role in the development of positive attitudes. We find the results of our study beneficial in terms of the development of social work through the opportunity to take advantage of individuals' experiences. This study is relevant as it provides
a deep understanding of individuals’ lived experiences and feelings. (Less)
