- Women in the humanities : scientific ideals during the second half of the 20th century
This thesis examines scientific ideals of female humanists during the second half of the 20th century through the analytical concept scientific or scholarly persona. The aim with this thesis is to show how scientific ideals have been negotiated in the context of obituaries of female scholars active in the humanities. The study is based on a compilation of all female scholars active in the humanities during the period of 1949–1970, from which a selection of 23 has been studied more closely. Earlier research has traditionally approached women’s higher studies from a perspective of women as pioneers. Such studies have primarily been interested in the first... Such studies have primarily been interested in the first women with regard to their role as students or the first women to complete a doctoral degree during the early 20st century. These studies have shown that female scholars and students met considerable resistance from both the university and society. Research on similar subjects has also been interested primarily in periods before 1949. The analytical concept of scientific persona has however been applied to women, but it has often been done individually and not in the sense of the humanities as a collective.
The group of women humanists in question for this thesis has been identified as the “breakthrough group” placed between the pioneers and the later larger generation of women scholars. Women scholars as a group and during this period have not been a subject for the history of the humanities. These women served as important role models for later generations of female scholars in the humanities. With a particular focus on female humanists this thesis will therefore provide new and relevant knowledge about the scientific conditions which these women both adapted to and helped form within their specific fields.
The thesis also contributes with new and valuable knowledge about the scientific ideals of female humanists to the relatively new field history of the humanities. The study does also present the usefulness of obituaries as a historical source and how the analytical concept of scholarly persona can be applied to a large group. The results show that the scientific ideals found in the obituaries was possible to serve as a collective ideal for all the fields within the humanities, but the study has also uncovered what kind of personal traits that was negotiated as non-ideal.
