- Abstract
- This thesis approaches the cryptoporticus of private roman architecture in the context of the rural villa and urban domus, with the explicit purpose of examining how the functions and roles of this multifaceted structure differs in these settings. In order to accomplish this goal, the thesis employs a comparative methodology where specific attributes of eleven buildings with a cryptoporticus are presented, described and compared with each other. Out of these buildings, seven are villas and four are domus. The attributes of the included buildings that this thesis primarily examines are communication between the cryptoporticus and other environments within the building, as well as decoration of not just the cryptoporticus, but also... In order to accomplish this goal, the thesis employs a comparative methodology where specific attributes of eleven buildings with a cryptoporticus are presented, described and compared with each other. Out of these buildings, seven are villas and four are domus. The attributes of the included buildings that this thesis primarily examines are communication between the cryptoporticus and other environments within the building, as well as decoration of not just the cryptoporticus, but also neighbouring environments. By focusing on the above mentioned attributes the thesis is able to ascertain several relevant aspects pertaining to its purpose, such as what group of peoples and types of activities that the cryptoporticus is meant to house. The thesis concludes that several identifiable trends of the cryptoporticus are essentially similar in the villa and domus, but also identifies a few that are specific to certain types. Level of decoration within the cryptoporticus remains the same in villa and domus, which both fall across the spectrum from luxurious colourful illustrations to essentially lacking decorative elements altogether. The cryptoporticus is within the context of the domus in the majority of cases communicative to the larger building to an extent not seen in the villa, and in several cases acts as the sole communicator between various parts of the building. In the villa, the cryptoporticus can be completely avoided, and interaction with it is generally solely for ambulatory purposes. This can possibly be explained by the limited space in the urban domus, and the resulting multifunctionality that is forced onto the cryptoporticus if one wishes to incorporate it within the urban context.
