- Abstract
- This thesis examines whether, and in what ways, climate change is framed as a security issue in Swedish party politics. Using a qualitative discourse analysis, the study analyzes forty-eight party documents produced by all Swedish parliamentary parties between 2007 and 2022. The theoretical framework combines securitization theory and framing theory, drawing on Matt McDonald’s four climate security discourses: national, human, international, and ecological security.

The findings show that climate change is consistently framed through all four security dimensions, though with considerable variation between parties and over time. The international security discourse is present throughout the entire period, emphasizing the global nature of climate change and the need for international cooperation. From the late 2010s onward, national security framings become more prominent, particularly through increased attention to crisis preparedness and societal resilience. Moreover, the analysis reveals a notable discursive shift from an earlier focus on the security of the biosphere and vulnerable populations in developing countries toward greater emphasis on the vulnerability of the Swedish population.
Overall, the study provides a comprehensive account of how climate change is constructed as a security issue in Swedish party discourse and offers a relevant discursive foundation for future research on climate-related policy outcomes. (Less)
