“Jag vill att dom visar att dom bryr sig!” En studie om gymnasieelevers perspektiv på elevhälsoteam

Abstract
The aim of the current study was to explore high school students’ perspectives on the Swedish student health system (elevhälsan), as well as the construction of a survey instrument to implement the study. Due to the general increase in adolescent mental health issues alongside a lack of national research regarding adolescent views on elevhälsan, this cross-sectional explorative study seeked to amplify students’ own perspectives. 506 high school students in southern Sweden responded to the survey contructed for this study, which was distributed digitally via social media as well as locally in two high schools. The aim of the current study was to explore high school students’ perspectives on the Swedish student health system (elevhälsan), as well as the construction of a survey instrument to implement the study. Due to the general increase in adolescent mental health issues alongside a lack of national research regarding adolescent views on elevhälsan, this cross-sectional explorative study seeked to amplify students’ own perspectives. 506 high school students in southern Sweden responded to the survey contructed for this study, which was distributed digitally via social media as well as locally in two high schools. Using exploratory factor analysis, two factors were identified from the results: Stigma as a barrier for support and Visibility of elevhälsan. The survey also gathered qualitative data regarding what might prevent adolescents from contacting elevhälsan, as well as what employees of elevhälsan should focus on in their work. The results indicate that stigma seems to be a general barrier preventing adolescents from seeking support, regardless of school year or gender. Furthermore, results showed that elevhälsan seemed to be slightly more visible for adolescent women than for adolescent men, though no differences were found regarding school year. Overall, the results indicate that there is ample reason to attempt to destigmatize help-seeking behaviour in high school environments, as well as increasing the visibility of elevhälsan. Further research is needed to continue exploring adolescent perspectives and increase understanding of how best to use elevhälsan to support adolescents in need. (Less)

Resultaten visade även att elevhälsoteamet tycks vara något synligare för unga kvinnor än för unga män, men inga skillnader noterades mellan årskurser. Sammantaget tyder resultatet i den aktuella studien på att det finns belägg för att arbeta med insatser som avstigmatiserar hjälpsökande beteende i skolmiljön, samt ökar elevhälsans synlighet. Vidare forskning krävs för att ytterligare kartlägga ungdomarnas perspektiv samt få en bättre förståelse för hur vuxenvärlden på bästa sätt kan använda elevhälsoteamens arbete för att stötta unga med behov av psykosociala insatser.
