Abstract
This thesis researches a perceived paradox between the Swedish government's reluctance to identify their foreign policy as feminist, and the simultaneous production of an inclusion plan that implements feminist and queer perspectives. The application of a feminist perspective on Fairclough's three-dimensional model of Critical Discourse Analysis aims to investigate how nationalist and feminist discourses are combined to form the narrative of a morally superior Sweden in the government's plan Stolt och trygg. With the use of the queer-tehoretical terms: homonormativity and homonationalism, the analysis illuminates how LGBTQI+rights are constructed as exceptional Swedish values, contrasted to non-Swedish cultures, which are portrayed as... With the use of the queer-tehoretical terms: homonormativity and homonationalism, the analysis illuminates how LGBTQI+rights are constructed as exceptional Swedish values, contrasted to non-Swedish cultures, which are portrayed as regressive and a threat. As the government presents itself and the Swedish national identity as a moral protector, inclusivity becomes strategically used through a feminist rhetoric to reinforce nationalist ideals within a neoliberal narrative of crisis. This study contributes to the feminist field by applying an international queer theoretical framework on a Swedish context, to lift how mainstream political parties adapt populist and nationalist rhetoric. As the analysis is limited to a single document, further research on how homonationalism is affecting other areas of Swedish politics is needed. (Less)
