- Abstract
- This study explored positive experiences and minority joy among gay men. Given the limited amount of research in this area, an exploratory qualitative study was conducted using a critical realist epistemology. Data were generated through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Three overarching themes were identified. The first, Freedom from heteronormativity, describes the experience of breaking away from heteronormative expectations and choosing one’s own path in life and personal expression. The second theme, Seeing and being seen, illuminates how minority joy is manifested in interactions with others. The final theme, Growing through adversity, addresses how negative experiences can contribute to... (More)

The final theme, Growing through adversity, addresses how negative experiences can contribute to personal development. The findings largely align with previous research on the positive lived experiences of gay men. A particularly central aspect of the results concerns how moving away from hetero- and masculinity norms can also represent a step toward perceived freedom and health. The study contributes to the field by elaborating on the concept of minority joy and its implications for the well-being of gay men. Future research should quantitatively examine the prevalence of minority joy and its associations with health and ill health. (Less)
- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
