Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
Abstract
Many Swedish people are living under the weight of a financially precarious situation. Previous research has illuminated the steep cost of experiencing financial difficulties, finding relationships to psychological distress and even suicidal behaviors. Against this background, it is important to further examine the economic and psychological factors associated with financial difficulties. The present cross-sectional study examined whether financial literacy, psychological distress, loneliness, and coping predicted financial difficulties, operationalised as recurring difficulties paying bills during the past 12 months, expected difficulties paying bills in the upcoming two months, and having registered debts with the Swedish Enforcement... The present cross-sectional study examined whether financial literacy, psychological distress, loneliness, and coping predicted financial difficulties, operationalised as recurring difficulties paying bills during the past 12 months, expected difficulties paying bills in the upcoming two months, and having registered debts with the Swedish Enforcement Authority. Data were collected through an online questionnaire completed by 2,035 adults aged 18-96 during the autumn of 2024. Hierarchical logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify the strongest predictors of financial difficulties. The results showed that financial literacy, psychological distress, loneliness, and avoidant coping were significant predictors of at least one outcome. Financial literacy was a significant predictor across all models, highlighting its importance for financial outcomes. Psychological distress emerged as the strongest predictor of both past and expected difficulties paying bills. This study contributes an integrated perspective on the connections between economic and psychological variables. The exact nature of these relationships are as of yet undetermined and further research is needed. (Less)
