Abstract (Swedish)
Malmö is one of the largest cities in Sweden. Its industrial past has left a mark on the buildings, now occupied by sophisticated offices for new entrepreneurial businesses (Baeten, 2012; Holgersen, 2014). This shift also has implications for the city's social class structure; this research aims to identify social mechanisms that drive the reconfiguration of social classes in Malmö.
The purpose is to explain the mechanisms by which social classes are transformed over time, and to generate knowledge about the individual conditions that shape the formation of class. Using Qualitative Comparative Analysis, the research aims to underscore how economic, educational, residential, non-migrant, and occupational status interact in this context.... (More)

The purpose is to explain the mechanisms by which social classes are transformed over time, and to generate knowledge about the individual conditions that shape the formation of class. Using Qualitative Comparative Analysis, the research aims to underscore how economic, educational, residential, non-migrant, and occupational status interact in this context. Leading this to the following research questions:
1. “What social mechanisms underpin the reconfiguration of social class in Malmö since 1993?”
2. “How do these mechanisms change over time?”
Results of the thesis show that the reconfiguration of social class structure needs to be contextualised within the asset-based class, aligning with Adkins et al. (2022). The thesis utilises three layers of analysis: macro, meso, and macro-meso. The first one shows how neoliberal planning has impacted social stratification. The second level divides the longitudinal analysis into three phases -early, transitional, and late- in which the different status-sequences are analysed in the context of the city. Finally, in the third layer, patterns of status sequences reveal a class-structure incoherence and contradiction: while educational credentials, labour-market stability, and income possession should be reliable indicators of better outcomes, the key role of housing undermines this.
