- Abstract
- This architectural thesis investigates a general system
for a sustainable tourism-related built environment
in the Swedish mountains. With a growing interest
in hiking and nature-based tourism, the Swedish
mountain landscape has become an increasingly
popular destination, while at the same time serving
as important grazing land for reindeer. This calls for
careful development and reduced environmental
impact.
Through a design-based methodology, the project
explores how small-scale architectural interventions

Through a design-based methodology, the project
explores how small-scale architectural interventions
can contribute to a more responsible and sustainable
mountain infrastructure. A catalogue of six small-scale
objects and buildings, ranging in scale from a simple
bench to a mountain cabin, proposes how architecture
can increase accessibility, provide shelter, and
encourage visitors to take greater responsibility in the
mountain environment.
The work is not site-specific; however, for the purpose
of exemplifying the Catalogue, the objects are placed
along the stretch between Kvikkjokk and Ammarnäs on
the Kungsleden trail, the least-travelled section, which
currently has limited accommodation options.
The project aims to serve as a basis for discussion for
future mountain stakeholders. (Less)
