- Abstract
- This study aims to describe and analyse similarities and differences in substance-dependent individuals' experiences of encounters with various institutions within medical care, social services, and the legal system. The method for this study was qualitative, and we conducted semi-structured life world interviews with five people who had previous experiences with substance-dependent individuals and contact with said institutions. The gathered material was analysed using Erving Goffman's theory of stigma and Martin Buber's dialogue philosophical perspective on the encounter, with concepts such as I–It, I–Thou. This study found that what distinguishes good encounters is the experience of being seen, listened to, and treated as a human being... (More)

This study found that what distinguishes good encounters is the experience of being seen, listened to, and treated as a human being rather than a case in the crowd. Less good encounters stand out as more distant, standardized, and are characterized by experiences of being judged or reduced to a problem. The results highlight that the quality of the meeting is crucial and varies both between and within institutional contexts. When the meeting is successful, conditions for trust and change are created. When it is lacking, it risks entrenching stigma and the marginalization that already characterizes the target group.
