Palmen och kronan: En semiotisk studie om brittiska kolonialfrimärkens budskap och ideologi 1890–1960

Abstract
This thesis conducts a semiotic study of British colonial stamps produced between 1890 and 1960. The main focus is the stamp's message and ideology, understood within the theoretical framework of Roland Barthes and complemented with postcolonial theory by Anne Kaplan and John MacKenzie. The study concludes that two main mythologies can be constructed by analysing the samples, one regarding the all-encompassing and exotic empire and the second regarding the empire as a civilising force. The essay argues that these stamps work as legitimising tools of the state and the nation by representing its various issues.
