- Abstract (Swedish)
(Less) - Abstract
- In the southeastern coastal landscape of Södermanland, on the Tunaberg Peninsula, lies a small mill town called Buskhyttan. It is strategically placed within its community and has the potential of being a well connected and active rural area where you can live a life closer to nature. The town emerged with the establishment of Marsvikens sawmill in 1917, but since the end of the 1970s the industry has been shut down and the area has been left to ruin.
Today the site is abandoned, closed off, and inaccessible. Once an important part of the village’s identity, it has become spatially static, preventing further development.
It blocks Buskhyttan’s access to the coast and the surrounding nature and sea. This limits the residents’ chances to enjoy the recreational qualities of living in a coastal rural area, which would normally make the place very attractive to live in.
This project explores how a rural site with a strong historical foundation can be developed through architecture, using Buskhyttan’s former sawmill area as an example. The work adopts a tentative and exploratory approach as an alternative to following a predefined detailed development plan. A central question is whether it is possible to identify and build upon existing values and qualities within the site’s history, and translate these into a contemporary future development.
By identifying qualities in the existing landscape and then enhancing them through design I create a series of rooms for both recreational and social purposes. This acts as a starting point for a reactivation of the area, while hopefully also allowing for a gradual process of local appropriation and making the site accessible to the wider Tunaberg community and visitors.
