- Abstract
- The second wave women’s movement in the 1970s was global and many organized for better healthcare, against the exploitation of women’s bodies and for women’s liberation. In Sweden the largest and most visible group within the second wave women’s movement was Grupp 8. They existed in several cities and places in the country and out of all the local groups within Grupp 8, nine were donated to different archival institutions. The purpose of this thesis is to illuminate how Grupp 8’s archives being stored at different institutions affects their availability and findability. To achieve this purpose two questions are asked. - The second wave women’s movement in the 1970s was global and many organized for better healthcare, against the exploitation of women’s bodies and for women’s liberation. How is the availability, findability and usability affected by storing Grupp 8's archives at different institutions? What does the order and organization of the archive mean for availability?
To answer the questions and fulfill the research purpose all nine archival institutions that store a Grupp 8 archive were contacted. Two archivists were interviewed and two others replied by email. The theoretical framework that is used is affect theory and the term glitter. Affect theory is used to highlight the affective relationships archivists and archival institutions have toward
their Grupp 8 archive, and how that may affect the organization and availability of the archive. The term glitter is used to analyze Grupp 8 as a feminist archive and to see if they exhibit fragmentary characteristics.
The findings of the study show that where the different Grupp 8 archives are stored affects how they are organized and made available. All informants want their archive to be made available but have differing resources available to them to make it happen. For a user it means navigating different websites and archival catalogues to be able to get an overview of Grupp 8’s archives. How the structure and order of the archive is designed is also dependent on which archival institution stores it. It means that some Grupp 8 archives have a structure based on the materials structure where as others use ”allmänna arkivschemat”. In means of availability the Grupp 8 archives that have an archival description and clear structure are more available. (Less)
