Abstract
Se huset - See the house is a thesis presenting the ownership of the single-family house as a type of stewardship. An entrusted care.
As a point of departure I have taken the Swedish villa from the 60s, with its characteristics and the social and political context of its development, and looked into the consequences of attitudes towards this category of housing.
My inquiry is led by questions of value and preservation attached to houses that for a long time have been changed and renovated in careless ways. A low degree of protection, status and understanding has allowed many of them to be transformed into houses lacking both character and identity.
A house must sometimes adapt to time, necessity, or even desire. But not be distorted.... (More)
Se huset - See the house is a thesis presenting the ownership of the single-family house as a type of stewardship. An entrusted care.
As a point of departure I have taken the Swedish villa from the 60s, with its characteristics and the social and political context of its development, and looked into the consequences of attitudes towards this category of housing.
My inquiry is led by questions of value and preservation attached to houses that for a long time have been changed and renovated in careless ways. A low degree of protection, status and understanding has allowed many of them to be transformed into houses lacking both character and identity.
A house must sometimes adapt to time, necessity, or even desire. But not be distorted. Transformation or insensitive renovation will have an impact on the neighbourhood for generations to come. Even a group of mismanaged villas, originally built in a uniform character, can lead to a collective pale cast of thought.
Based on a villa built in 1964, and against the backdrop of the spirit of the time, I have proposed a few strategies of care in varying degrees, culminating in three proposals for extending the living area: one addition and one extension - where the architectural language of the 1960s remains legible - and one small underground extension visible only as a glowing prism.

With this work I want to contribute reflective thoughts to the eagerness for restoration and transformation. Ultimately, I would like this thesis to become an accessible publication encouraging a closer reading of our villas from the 1960s, so that we actually see the house. (Less)

Med utgångspunkt från den svenska 60-talsvillans karaktär och tillblivelse utifrån en social och politisk kontext, lyfts uppkomst och konsekvenser av rådande attityd gentemot denna kategori av bostadshus. Undersökningen har styrts av frågor kring värden och bevarande länkat till en hustyp som i många fall och under lång tid behandlats utan omsorg, alternativt på ett ovarsamt sätt. Hur förvaltar vi den? Hur skulle vi kunna förvalta den? Vad finns det att se? Det ligger en frihet i att äga sin bostad. Och så länge vi håller oss till detaljplan och bevarandeprogram, kan vi välja allt mellan att bara mysa i soffan till att göra boendet till ett föränderligt projekt. Ett hus ska såklart få förändras utifrån tid, behov och även önskemål. Men inte förvanskas.
Oaktsamma eller okänsliga förändringar av ett hus kan påverka ett kvarter, en trakt, en stad i generationer. Även ett ovarsamt behandlat småhusbestånd, kan med tiden leda till en kollektiv eftertanke av krank blekhet.
Jag har därför följt ett hus från 1964 genom några tänkta grader av förvaltarskap, som leder fram till tre förslag på tillbyggnader. Ett friliggande tillägg och en utbyggnad som båda talar 60-talets formspråk, samt en underjordisk förlängning av källaren, som ovan mark ger sig tillkänna som en lysande prisma.
Intentionen med detta examensarbete har varit att bidra med reflekterande tankar till en rådande iver att förändra utan hänsyn till vare sig byggår eller arkitektonisk stil. Målet har varit en lustfylld och tillgänglig publikation som inspirerar till en omläsning av våra 60-talsvillor och deras kvarter, så att vi faktiskt ser huset. (Less)
