- Abstract
- Extending the retirement age has become an inevitable trend given the deepening of population ageing and the need to reduce the financial burden of pensions. Many countries have already introduced policies to delay retirement. China began to implement the delayed retirement policy in 2025. As the policy was introduced relatively recently, retirement ages vary by characteristics such as gender and occupation type. Therefore, the implementation process is relatively complex, and the current effects of the policy are unclear. In this context, the paper explores the willingness to delay retirement among middle-aged and elderly public sector employees in China, as well as the factors that influence this willingness.

Therefore, the implementation process is relatively complex, and the current effects of the policy are unclear. In this context, the paper explores the willingness to delay retirement among middle-aged and elderly public sector employees in China, as well as the factors that influence this willingness.
This paper uses the 2018 (wave 4) national follow-up survey of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) to conduct a cross-sectional study employing multiple logistic regression analysis based on the life course theory framework. The results showed that the willingness to delay retirement among middle-aged and elderly public sector employees is limited. Older employees are more likely to delay retirement; female employees are more likely to delay retirement than male employees; those with rural household registration are more likely to delay retirement than those with urban household registration; those with better self-reported health are more likely to delay retirement; those without paid vacation are more likely to delay retirement than those with paid vacation.
According to these findings, this paper proposes some policy recommendations to encourage individuals to voluntarily delay retirement and to ensure fairness for the sustainability of the pension system. (Less) - Popular Abstract
