Abstract (Swedish)

(Less)
Abstract
The construction sector today stands for a significant amount of Sweden’s total climate impact. One part of this impact arises in regard to excavated soil. At the same time, demands for a more sustainable future and circular economy increase which in turn means new solutions regarding soil management are required.

The purpose of this study is to research which obstacles and opportunities there are for an increased reuse of excavated soil as well as figuring out which environmental and economic advantages arise from local reuse. The study will also answer how today's working practices involving soil management can develop to advocate for more resource efficient management.

The work begins with a literature study to receive an understanding of the theory behind excavated soil. Thereafter two case studies were carried out at two different projects with the purpose of grasping how excavated soils are managed practically in reality. The study concludes with a few interviews which deepens our understanding of the theory as well as how excavated soils are managed.

The conclusions of the study show that the most prominent obstacles for an increased reuse of excavated soil include classification, planning, regulations, and coordination. The study shows that when it comes to local reuse compared to landfills, economic and environmental benefits arise, such as reducing the need for transport, which in turn reduces climate impact. An additional benefit is that virgin material is saved by reusing excavated soil. The work procedures of today can be improved by earlier planning as well as increased coordination to encourage more resource effective management of excavated soil. This can be achieved with the help of digital tools which share information between participants about where excess and shortage arise between projects. Making the regulations clearer and lessening the requirements will improve the work procedures of today (Less)
