Abstract
This report will outline the design process and result for the product called BRIO EXPLORE; a complement to BRIOs railway system. For children, everything in the world is new, and strange. To make sense of life and the things that exist around them, children use play. They practice social interaction, pretend to cook, clean or garden, mimick animal sounds, or collect rocks. Exploring through play is important, and BRIOs railway system provides one way to explore the world. During this project, I have developed a complement to the railway, in an attempt to widen the number of ways a child might explore or play with this toy. The complement aims to allow the child to not only build the railway, but also the world around it. This concept was... (More)

During this project, I have developed a complement to the railway, in an attempt to widen the number of ways a child might explore or play with this toy. The complement aims to allow the child to not only build the railway, but also the world around it. This concept was inspired by the fact that the packaging for BRIOs railway often feature worlds and backgrounds, and some fond memories of building landscapes myself during childhood. I have built a foundation of knowledge that have guided my design process and my choices through interviews with employees at BRIO, parents and preschool teachers, as well as through research on toy history and the toy market, the connection between gender and toys, as well as what kind of toys are good for children. I have also conducted tests with children; letting them use and explore prototypes, which gave me useful insight in how children play. The final product is a system of building blocks, compatible with already existing BRIO pieces, with which one can build one’s own world around the train-track. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
