Abstract
This thesis aims to clarify the risk that a confined aquifer can be contaminated from a spill of chlorinated solvents from a former dry-cleaning facility. This was investigated by conducting a case study at a former dry-cleaning facility in Bjärred that used PCE as a cleaning agent. The facility was active between the 1940s and 1970s, the spill from the process has had severe consequences with an estimated 250kg of PCE beneath the facility. Lateral spreading of the contamination is relatively well delimited by sampling in previous studies, whereas the extent of vertical migration is unclear.
The research in this thesis focused on how far the dissolved phase of the contaminant can penetrate in a long-term scenario and what implications... (More)

Lateral spreading of the contamination is relatively well delimited by sampling in previous studies, whereas the extent of vertical migration is unclear.
The research in this thesis focused on how far the dissolved phase of the contaminant can penetrate in a long-term scenario and what implications this could have for the underlying regional aquifer Alnarpströmmen. The study begins with data collection through a literature review and field measurements of groundwater levels. The collected data are then used to develop a conceptual model that forms the basis for a groundwater model. Finally, an MT3DMS simulation based on the model flow field is performed to quantify the dissolved-phase transport of PCE.
Results from the simulations in the thesis show that advective transport is strongly impeded by the glacial till beneath the facility and stagnates around 11 m below ground surface after 50 years, while soil samples in previous studies have detected contamination at 25 m depth. The model results indicate that the plume’s vertical extent is controlled by density-driven transport of free phase, which has likely migrated through fractures and sand lenses in the till to reach Alnarpsströmmen. Uncertainties in the conclusions stem from limited geological data and few calibration points. (Less)

(More)

(Less)
