From stockpile to landscape -- A time-based ecological strategy for Shougang South Zone

- Abstract
- This project explores the regeneration of a contaminated post-industrial landscape in the South Zone of Shougang, Beijing. The site contains industrial remnants, soil contamination, fragmented spaces, and limited public use. Based on literature review, policy analysis, and site investigation, the project develops a time-based ecological strategy structured around three stages: Contain, Evolve, and Connect Over Time. The design focuses on reducing environmental risks, supporting ecological succession, reusing industrial heritage, and improving ecological and social connectivity. Through phased landscape interventions, the project demonstrates how contaminated industrial land can gradually transform into a resilient ecological and public... (More)

- Popular Abstract
- Many former industrial areas face environmental problems after factories close, including contaminated land, abandoned infrastructure, and a lack of public activities. This project focuses on the South Zone of Shougang in Beijing, a former steel production area that has not yet been fully regenerated. Instead of proposing a rapid transformation, the project introduces a long-term ecological approach based on the stages of Contain, Evolve, and Connect Over Time. By combining ecological restoration, industrial heritage preservation, and public space design, the project shows how a polluted industrial site can gradually become a healthier, more attractive, and more connected landscape for both nature and people.
