- Abstract
- Variations in groundwater levels result from several complex hydrological processes (such as precipitation, evapotranspiration and groundwater-surface water interactions), and the groundwater response depends on factors including topography and physical properties related to the geology of the aquifer. By studying time series of hydrogeological data, such as groundwater levels and precipitation, information can be provided on groundwater-related processes such recharge, storage and discharge. Time series analysis can therefore be an effective method for increasing hydrogeological understanding of an aquifer. By studying time series of hydrogeological data, such as groundwater levels and precipitation, information can be provided on groundwater-related processes such recharge, storage and discharge. Time series analysis can therefore be an effective method for increasing hydrogeological understanding of an aquifer. While there is knowledge of groundwater level variations in Swedens alluvial aquifers, few studies have applied time series analysis to groundwater level variations from aquifers in bedrock.
This thesis presents a time series analysis of groundwater levels from bedrock wells located in various hydrogeological settings in Sweden. The aim was to analyse variations of groundwater levels and their correlation with precipitation in relation to their hydrogeological environments. The analysis was performed on time series data from 21 wells measured with four-hour frequency over a four-year period (2020-2024), obtained from the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU). To characterise the groundwater level variability, Seasonal and Trend decomposition using Loess (STL) was applied, which separates the time series into three components: seasonal, trend and residual. The relative importance of the components was then quantified using their variance ratios. Furthermore, the memory effect of the groundwater levels and their correlation with precipitation were investigated using auto-correlation and cross-correlation functions. The cross-correlation was applied to the entire length of the time series and to three-month sliding windows that were moved along the time series. In addition, the hydrogeological environments where the wells are located were characterised to interpret differences and similarities in the results.
The results showed that wells, primarily in crystalline bedrock overlain by thin soil layers of sandy till, were characterised by high seasonal and residual components, as well as a short memory effects. The cross-correlation function generally exhibited a well-defined peak with a rapid and strong response to precipitation. This is thought to be primarily due to good hydraulic connection with the atmosphere and low storage in the soil layers and bedrock. A gradual transition to wells in predominantly sedimentary bedrock overlain by thicker soil layers consisting of either low permeable, fine-grained soils or coarse-grained permeable soils was observed. These wells generally exhibited a stronger trend, lower residuals and a longer memory effect. Their cross-correlation functions showed a slowly rising correlation to a plateau which then gradually declined, generally a longer response time and lower correlation with precipitation were identified. This could be due to slower recharge and emptying of the aquifers because of a more limited atmosphere-groundwater connection, a thicker unsaturated zone and greater storage, which significantly attenuates and delays the impact of precipitation on groundwater levels.
(Less)
