Abstract (Swedish)

(Less)
Abstract
Uncertainties within geotechnical conditions has a large impact on the construction and civil engineering sector. To determine the actual conditions in the ground before construction, a geotechnical investigation needs to carry out. If the geotechnical investigation is insufficient, it can lead to delays, cost increases and the need for additional measures during the construction phase.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the value of geotechnical investigations and examine how the scope of the investigations can affect cost, time and quality in construction projects. The thesis is conducted through a combination of literature review and a qualitative method based on semi-structured interviews with consultants, clients and a contractor.

The results show that more extensive investigations can reduce uncertainties within geotechnical conditions. This does not necessarily imply that more extensive investigations lead to budget and time savings. The result of this thesis rather indicates that optimisation of the geotechnical investigations, through the appropriate choice of investigation level and required expertise, is preferable to more extensive geotechnical investigations. By optimising geotechnical investigations through an appropriate selection of investigation level and expertise, both time and costs can be reduced. The thesis also shows that geotechnical investigations have a major impact on risk management, engineering design and cost management in projects. (Less)
