Income Inequality and Political Polarisation

Abstract
This thesis examines to what extent income inequality has been associated with political polarisation in Sweden during the 1980-2020. The study examines both national and municipal level data to examine the relationship between the two concepts. The national data cover 1980-2020 while the municipal data cover 2011-2020. It employs quantitative methods such as multiple Ordinary Least Squares regressions and graphical methods to measure and visualise the association between income inequality and political polarisation. Second, the strength of the association between income inequality and political polarisation appears scale dependent where national data indicates that the two concepts are positively associated while municipal level data suggests a negative association. Third, the strength of the relationship between income inequality and political polarisation is influenced and partly determined by other socioeconomic factors. (Less)
