Abstract
During the second half of the 1960s, emotions and the emotional individual became more frequently discussed in Swedish newspaper and journal articles. Drawing upon articles by psychologist Claes Janssen and journalist Bernt Eklundh published from 1965 to 1968 in Ord och Bild, Göteborgs-Tidningen and Göteborgs-Posten, this thesis aims to explore this tendency. By employing a theoretical framework from the field of history of emotions, one objective is to examine how emotions are assessed in the empirical material. Furthermore, by employing sociologist Hartmut Rosa’s concept of availability (de. “Verfügbarkeit”, sv. “förfogbarhet”), a further objective is to examine the approaches and strategies utilized towards these desirable emotions.

Furthermore, by employing sociologist Hartmut Rosa’s concept of availability (de. “Verfügbarkeit”, sv. “förfogbarhet”), a further objective is to examine the approaches and strategies utilized towards these desirable emotions.

In Claes Janssen’s article, the quality and strength of the emotions are important in the assessment of them. Happiness and well-being are understood as progressive emotions, possible to continuously improve. This improvement is related to the degree of the experience’s autonomy from social and material circumstances. Furthermore, availability in the sense of Hartmut Rosa is central in the assessment of these emotions. In particular, Janssen seeks to expand the knowledge of how these emotions are experienced and achieved, thus increasing the accessibility to them.

In Bernt Eklundh’s articles, the polar opposites of the individual and surrounding world are prominent, and in the assessment of the emotions, their utility as enhancing the individual’s integrity toward this otherness is significant. Desirable religious emotions, however, have the function of overcoming these same opposites of the individual and the otherness. Moreover, method and emotions are closely related in the accessibility of the emotions. Through the methods, the emotions are made visible, controlled, and utilized.

Comparisons with earlier research on emotions during the 1960s and 1970s, as well as empirical comparisons with other newspaper and journal articles about emotions from 1960s, suggest that the views of Janssen and Eklundh are relevant to the broader historical research on emotions during the period.
