Abstract
This study aimed to examine the situation of children awaiting placement at The Swedish National Board of Institutional Care's (SiS) youth homes under the Care of Young Persons (Special Provisions) Act (LVU) from the perspectives of social workers, as well as how these social workers manage the waiting period. Our study used a qualitative interview method, in which we interviewed six social workers who have experience working with children awaiting placement at SiS youth homes. This study aimed to examine the situation of children awaiting placement at The Swedish National Board of Institutional Care's (SiS) youth homes under the Care of Young Persons (Special Provisions) Act (LVU) from the perspectives of social workers, as well as how these social workers manage the waiting period. Our study used a qualitative interview method, in which we interviewed six social workers who have experience working with children awaiting placement at SiS youth homes. In our analysis, we applied two theories. The first one, Michael Ungar’s social-ecological resilience, details how the relationship between the individual and their environment affects an individual's ability to develop resilience. The second is Urie Bronfenbrenner’s ecological system theory, which outlines how an individual's development is influenced by various systems, ranging from the person's immediate environment to larger social contexts, such as society as a whole. Our results show that the waiting period is shaped by uncertainty and suspense from both children's and the social worker’s perspective. There is a risk that children develop their own destructive survival strategies by escalating their problem behavior. The result also shows that social workers have developed their own strategies for coping and helping the children, differing from the guidelines outlined by the authorities. (Less)
