- Abstract
- Many of the world’s languages have several adnominal possessive constructions. Their use may be governed by several factors, one of which is the ‘animacy’ of the possessor noun phrase. The present thesis investigates this factor in the choice of possessive construction in eleven different traditional Swedish dialects. While similar studies to the present one have been conducted for other linguistic areas, there have been no such studies covering Scandinavian dialects. Based on a comprehensive survey of dialectological literature spanning the mid-19th century until today, the distribution of six different adnominal possessive constructions and their use within the respective dialects are investigated in relation to the possessor’s place in... While similar studies to the present one have been conducted for other linguistic areas, there have been no such studies covering Scandinavian dialects. Based on a comprehensive survey of dialectological literature spanning the mid-19th century until today, the distribution of six different adnominal possessive constructions and their use within the respective dialects are investigated in relation to the possessor’s place in a six-level animacy hierarchy. The possessive constructions investigated are the following: s-genitive, possessive dative, h-genitive, prepositional expressions, and possessor incorporation (compounding). It is shown that the animacy of the possessor is a significant factor in the choice of possessive construction, although it is not the only relevant factor. (Less)
