Retirement – a new beginning or the beginning of the end?

Abstract
The chapter explores what retirement means to women about to, or having recently retired in the current economic climate. It examines the choices perceived available to pre-retirement and retired people and their attitudes towards retirement. From our findings we are able to deduce that not everyone approaches retirement in the same way. Davies and Jenkins (2013) categorize individual-level experiences of the retirement transition into five positions: clean breakers; continuing scholars; opportunists; the reluctant; avoiders. We also categorize retirees depending on how they view themselves and their overall attitudes to retirement.
