Abstract
More recently, the number of elderly immigrants has increased. This means that Sweden is faced with new challenges. The purpose of this study was to illustrate how the elder immigrants general situation in Helsingborg looks like, as well as how social workers work to integrate this target group. The purpose of this study was to illustrate how the elder immigrants general situation in Helsingborg looks like, as well as how social workers work to integrate this target group. Furthermore, I wished to have an answer on whether social workers feel that there is a continuing need to be concentrated on the integration of elder immigrants. To get answers to my questions, I have interviewed five social workers in Helsingborg who are working on issues that concern elder and integration. The method I used in this study is qualitative. The theoretical frameworks for this study were cultural pluralism on community level and empowerment on individual level. The conclusion that I drew from the material is that there is no specific integration plan for the elder immigrants. There were, however, facilities for the elder immigrants, such as multilingual staff at the care home as well as availability of information of Swedish rules and standards in home language. Previous research has shown that elder immigrants face difficulties in the new Swedish society, because of the low level of education and socio-cultural level they usually belong. Introduction of the Swedish society is available in the integration process, as well as there are meeting points for the elder immigrants. Even if the will is there to integrate these elder immigrants, the modern and productive society is focused on those of working age. The resources are limited which means that priority must be done and the elder immigrants do not belong to that priority. (Less)
