- Smålands museum, the museum of Småland, is a museum for the county of Kronoberg, a mission given to the museum by the state and county council. The main fields of the museum are the cultural heritage and the history of culture of the region. The museum of Småland is also the Swedish museum of glass. This Master s thesis focuses on the information requirements of the employees at the museum of Småland. Because of the financial status of the museum, the librarian that worked at the museum had to quit about four years ago. The information provision of the employees then deteriorated. The thesis covers an analysis of the information requirements of the employees and the offered information services by the museum of Småland. Included in the scope of the thesis was to investigate how the information service can be built up to best serve the information needs of the employees at the museum. In order to be able to answer these questions interviews were performed with the division managers, the director of the museum, another employee and the archivist that works part time at the museum. All employees working for the museum of Småland were asked to participate in an inquiry to give their perspective on the information need and the services they desired. The questions asked were for example what type of information they need, how they find it and what sources they currently are using. From the results of the interviews and the inquiry a starting-point for how to build up the information service at the museum has been formulated. The result of the survey indicated that information is of considerable value to the museum. The information needs associated with the employees assignments is of both temporary and regular characteristic. The authors of the thesis have suggested that the priorities to satisfy the information needs are to arrange the collections, make it possible to find literature in a catalogue and have a person responsible for the library. With these measures taken the museum, among other things, will save much time. This time can be used by the employees for other tasks than information seeking. With the time saved the museum will in the long run be able to maintain high scientific quality and be an active part in the development of the society. (Less)
