What reasons are there for taking care of ones relatives at home instead of putting them in an old people's home? We used a qualitative method interviewing people at different positions within the local authorities in Landskrona. Further, we interviewed two elderly immigrants and a relative to one of them, and an elderly Swedish man. We found out by our studies that when it comes to immigrant families who are taking care of their elderly relatives, it has to do with both their cultural traditions and a strive to keep the family together. Thus stability and security within the family is retained. According to the results of our study, this is important both to the older and the younger generations, especially when people has to leave their home countries. It has to do with ones self-identity and to know ones history. (Less)
