The method of data collection has been interviewing five people, two females and three males, all about the age of 20. All five had for some time received social allowance and participated in various projects in order to be employable. The data is used to construct a "typical encounter" which is thematically described as the expectations, the practices, the outcome of the encounter and, finally, what emotions the encounter brought about. The data is analysed from the theoretical starting point of pattern of assessments, marginalization and processes of socialisation. The analysis shows that the "typical encounter" consists of detailed inquiries and assessments aimed to categorise from a start of moral pattern of assessment. The "typical encounter" is also a part of a process of marginalization and finally can it be seen as an obvious part of the process of socialisation in society. Three conclusions can be drawn from this study. First these data don't support the notion that youths view social allowance as a mean of lasting support. A second conclusion is that there are very strong assessments with moral implications hidden in the pattern of assessment and categorising. This categorising is a part of the processes of marginalization which contribute to the socialisation of normality of working life but - and that is a point of this study - even risk to socialise people to believe that the normal working life is not for all. The third conclusion is that the clients participate in an encounter of which she or he knows the parts but have no comprehensive picture. (Less)
