Qualitative interviews with three people who previously abused drugs have been analysed using Ted Goldberg’s Theory of Stigmatisation. The results show that the theory was able to explain significant events in these people’s lives, which led them into drug abuse and their emotional... (More)

This essay investigates the importance of self-image in an individual’s choice of a life of drug abuse, the strategies used to hide deviant behaviour, the emotions that underlie that behaviour and the reasons given for acting deviantly. Qualitative interviews with three people who previously abused drugs have been analysed using Ted Goldberg’s Theory of Stigmatisation. The results show that the theory was able to explain significant events in these people’s lives, which led them into drug abuse and their emotional response to those events. The essay proceeds to discuss the limitations of stigmatisation concepts and the need for other theoretical concepts in explaining drug addict’s behaviour and experiences. (Less)
