- Abstract
- This essay is a study about "Sfi", Swedish language education for immigrants. Our main purpose with the study was to find out the reasons behind Helsingborg’s decision to privatize Sfi, a part of the public sector. We interviewed a local politician and representatives for the public organizer, Vuxenutbildningen Kärnan, and the private organizer, NK-Datacenter. In the interviews we wanted to focus on possible differences and similarities between the public and the private sector and what factors could affect the education. We divided our interview questions into four themes, language learning, quality, students’ motivation and public/private. The conclusion of the study is that we found that the reason for the privatization of Sfi was that... (More)

We divided our interview questions into four themes, language learning, quality, students’ motivation and public/private. The conclusion of the study is that we found that the reason for the privatization of Sfi was that the result of the public organizer was so bad that a change was inevitable. The big difference between the public and the private organizer was that the owner and the teachers at NK-Datacenter had a remarkable commitment towards their work and the students. We believe that the reason for this is the small organization, which encourages fresh ideas and participation in decision-making. Although we found some differences between the public and the private organizer we believe that the main issue isn’t what alternative you choose, the main thing is that there is a competitive situation that improves and modernize the education.
